Competition Guidelines

Qualifying Meets

Picture
On a given day of hunting, children are expected to arrive with clean pony and tack and proper turnout for the rider. Braiding is discouraged. There will be a minimum of three judges, judging both the hilltopping and first flight divisions. The first flight division is divided between 12 & under, and 13 & over (to the age of 18), while the hilltopping division is 10 & under and 11 & over.

The judges may rotate through the fields or judge one specific field.
At the end of the days’ hunting, the judges will review their cards and decide which pairs (rider / mount) qualify for the finals. Those qualifiers will be invited to attend the finals at a location determined each year.

Finals

The finals are held each year in late October or early November and hosted by a participating hunt. The competition begins with a judged equitation round and is followed by a 45 minute (give or take) mock hunt.  The judges will then select at least 10 riders from each division to ride in a final test.  The final test is generally comprised of several jumps, a gate, dropped rail, a water crossing,  and/or any other test the judges deem appropriate.
